Did Ya’ Hear?

By Mary Craft

Dog Style is coming to the food truck at the Island Market IGA parking lot. Lisa Jones will be serving Italian beef sandwiches, Polish dogs, Chicago style hotdogs, kraut dogs, chili dogs and cheesesteaks. All will be made with Vienna beef products. The opening will, hopefully, be Thursday, March 7th. This Chicagoan will be a regular!

The Island Market IGA will be adding a salad bar and hot food bar in April. They are playing around with the hot food items right now and have come up with for “Greek Day” falafels on pita bread with tzatziki sauce and you can add feta cheese or Kalamira olives. It is an ancient Mediterranean street food made of chickpeas. For “Picnic Day” ribs and baked beans and “Pasta Day” chicken Alfredo. They are also working on a breakfast menu like biscuits & gravy.

Padre Boat Tours is now available on weekends and in its second year is adding a beautiful loop cruise through the Don Patricio Bridge to their dolphin and sunset tours. The two hour cruise onboard the 35’ Packery Queen is $39, for ages 2 – 9 is $29 and under age 2 is $5. Go to the website to book online. For more info call 361-252-1510.

Padre Island National Seashore offers “Ranger-led Walks to Novillo Line Camp” every Saturday at 10 am until March 30th. It was one of the cattle ranching camps on the Dunn Cattle Ranch in late 19th and 20th centuries. The walk is about 3/4 mile round-trip and the guided portion is about 30 minutes. Space is limited and sign-ups are required. Call 361-949-8068.

Port Aransas Community Theater will feature a Johnny Cash Tribute with Bennie Wheels “Walkin’ the Line” on Saturday, March 9th and a Fleetwood Mac Tribute “Dreams” on Saturday March 16h. Both shows are 8 – 10 pm with doors opening at 7 pm.

Coastal Pet Supply & Exotics latest addition is the axolotl which is part of the salamander family. It is very interesting in that it lives 10 – 15 years mainly because it can regenerate any organ or limb it needs. It also doesn’t age during that time. A fun place to take the kids during spring break with their more than 50 reptiles, parakeets, chinchilla, bunnies, guinea pigs and more. They also do dog grooming and are now open until 9 pm Tuesday – Sunday. The store is located in the Pelican Plaza.

Spoonbill Bay Development is a 205 unit housing development on the bayside of Highway 361. It is different from other Port A developments in that they are cottage style homes starting around 800 square feet with each home having a private pool. Pricing starts around $500,000 and is expected to cater to people in San Antonio and Austin who want a second home near the beach rather than STRs. The developers are Alex, Harris, Craig Kerr and Willard Hammonds, Jr. who have done many projects including Aruba Resort on the Island.

The 45th Annual Fulton Oysterfest is next weekend Thursday, March 7th 5 pm, Friday 5 pm, Saturday 10 am and Sunday 10 am – 6 pm. Lots of vendors, a carnival, parade and more than a dozen bands.

Hot Wheels Monster Trucks will be at the American Bank Center on Saturday, March 23rd 12:30 pm and 7:30 pm and Sunday 2:30 pm.

Island Wellness & Nutrition is having a two year anniversary party on Thursday, March 7th all day. There will be food and drinks, in store specials and giveaways. They are located in the Pelican Plaza.

Spring Break is spread across only one week this year instead of two and starts Friday, March 8th.

There will be a total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8th darkening the skies for about four minutes and dropping the temperature about 10 degrees.. The path in Texas will run through San Antonio, Austin and Dallas. Here we will only be able to see a partial eclipse. The next total solar eclipse will be in 2044.
